Fiction writer, playwright and teacher of writing Lesley Glaister joins the Huntly Book Festival on Friday 3rd of October at 2.30pm in the Brander Library to talk about her latest novel “Little Egypt” and the sometimes difficult road to its creation.
Little Egypt – WINNER 2014 JERWOOD FICTION UNCOVERED PRIZE
Elderly, Egypt-mad twins Isis and Osiris find their neglected English lives disturbed to catastrophic effect by the arrival of American Anarchist, Spike.
Lesley’s first novel was published in 1990 and since then she’s published 11 further novels and numerous short stories. She’s received both a Somerset Maugham and a Betty Trask award, won the Yorkshire Post Author of the Year Award in 1993 and been short and long-listed for many literary prizes. She also teaches creative writing at the University of St Andrews and is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature.
A fantastic opportunity for those interested in hearing about the writer’s process.
Following on from a hugely popular, sell-out appearance at last year’s inaugural Huntly Book Festival, we are pleased to announce that Stuart MacBride will be joining us for not one but two events this year.
On Friday 3rd of October Stuart will be giving a talk at the OAP Hall at 7.30pm entitled:
Writing, neuroscience, the origins of language, and why you should never get in a lift with Sam Neill… May contain scenes of mild zombie rampage.
On Sunday, 5th October 5pm, join Stuart for a discussion of his Ash Henderson novels – BIRTHDAYS FOR THE DEAD and A SONG FOR THE DYING – the event will include spoilers, so make sure you’ve read the books first.
Details of how and when to get your tickets will be available soon – be sure to get yours early, as there will be limited numbers!
You’ll never look at your old books in the same way again!
During the ‘Altered Book’ workshop Isabell Buenz will introduce you to the art of altering books, it’s history and many techniques used across the world. You will learn to transform pre-loved books into beautiful, complex sculptures. Simple folding, cutting, adding of collage, pockets or embellishments can turn each book into a unique treasure.
During the ‘Paper Art’ workshop with Isabell Buenz you will be introduced to the surprising material of paper as a basis for beautiful little sketchbooks, boxes and greeting cards. Learn a variety of techniques that will help you transform paper and card into amazing results.
Both workshops are suitable for all levels and for people with an interest in art and craft from 8 – 80! Children under 10 should ideally be accompanied by an adult.
